About Equine Bedding
Good bedding material should exhibit high absorbency. It must also provide a soft cushion on which the animal can comfortably lay. It is important that the bedding permits urine to soak away and not 'pool' in the material. It should insulate the animal from the ground as well as giving a non-slip surface. Equestro Bed wood shavings meet all of these criteria and are produced in a clean environment from new untreated timber. Dust is extracted during the process. Compare this to straw; Dust and moulds found in straw can be harmful to some animals causing respiratory problems and triggering allergies. Whilst straw has its place it may be unsuitable especially if your horse eats it thereby ingesting mounds and dust.

Wood Shavings as Bedding
Because of the shortcomings of straw, horse owners have
looked for better bedding materials. Wood products, including sawdust, granulated wood shavings, and of course wood shavings themselves are the most common bedding alternatives to straw. Sawdust can sometimes be obtained from sawmills, whereas wood shavings and the granulated form are delivered straight to the customer in bales. What is important for all three products is that the are manufactured from wood that has not been treated with any preservative or other chemical. The main reason for the use of wood bedding is that horses in stables can develop allergies from fungal spores, dust and bacteria in straw bedding. Equestro Bed dust extracted wood shavings are suitable for horses with respiratory problems.
